Over the past decade, Brisbane’s apartment scene has skyrocketed making downsizing an easy choice when inner-city lifestyle is a priority. This was the case for a recent client of mine that were downsizing from their large family home to a beautiful three-bedroom apartment in the leafy suburb of New Farm, Brisbane. Although the building wasn’t old, it did have some wear and tear and a few things that needed updating and replacing. Enter your local interior designer, Eliza Grace Interiors!

The apartment was designed in a cool, contemporary style with an array of harsh black finishes and cool toned timber floors. The client’s and I wanted to inject a bit more warmth into the space and create a home that felt welcoming and calming upon entering. Â

Firstly, we updated the flooring to a beautiful, warm toned herringbone floor which transformed the space so quickly! We then replaced the black pendant lights with a contemporary ribbed white fixture, added white panelling to the back of the island bench and updated the kitchen sink mixer to a beautiful brass version. These simple changes created more balance in the kitchen and added a bit more contrast to the previously all black look. Â

The living and dining spaces needed a little more privacy than a roller blind, so we installed some lovely soft, off-white sheer curtains to both spaces. This again, created a much more warm, soft and inviting feel to the space.

The master bedroom had an all-black feature wall, which we swiftly changed to a neutral textured wallpaper to add warmth. The wallpaper we selected paired perfectly with the tones of the existing bedhead and artwork the client brought with them to their new home.

The final step in the process was to furnish the apartment and add pieces that are warm, textural and will last for years to come. We kept the palette quite neutral but added pops of blues through soft furnishings and décor pieces. The statement pop of colour in the living room is the custom artwork by Chris Riley that finishes off the space perfectly.
