As a Brisbane interior designer, one of my favourite things to do each year is to head down south, embrace the cold and be inspired by all thing’s interiors at the Décor & Design Show.  The annual show is where furniture, decorating, lighting and home décor suppliers showcase their latest offerings, raise brand awareness and get networking with interior designers and decorators from all over Australia. The show conveniently coincides with my birthday, so it’s the perfect excuse to have a weekend away in Melbourne and be inspired by the beautiful world of interior design. Below I am sharing my top interior design predictions from the show and what I can’t wait to use in upcoming projects here in Brisbane.

Trend 1: Piping Details
I am seeing piping pop up more and more when sourcing furniture items for my interior design projects. This classic design detail has been seen in traditional home styling for years as it pairs perfectly with the Hamptons design style and Queenslander design style we see here in Brisbane. But, we are now seeing a fresh take on piping and it being used in more contemporary style furniture pieces throughout a number of different design styles. Think piping to accentuate a beautiful, curved sofa or a hexagon ottoman with a gorgeous piping outline. A contrast piping is the best way to make the most impact and by using a coloured pipe you can add a pop of wow factor in a subtle and sophisticated way.

Trend 2: Multi-use Furniture
As spaces and proportions are getting smaller in homes and apartments, especially in the inner-city, we are requiring furniture to be multi-purpose and function above and beyond its basic needs. I saw a few great examples of this at the Décor & Design show through items such as plinth coffee tables that have a removable top layer to create a stool and table combo or clever storage in sofas and ottomans. Furniture designers are thinking of creative ways to make items multi-use and I’m excited to watch this space and see what the future holds!

Trend 3: Ombre Colour Styling
Ombre colour styling is something I have been a fan of for a long time, and I am now seeing it grow in popularity more and more. Gone are the days of matching the exact same pop of colour in your accessories and creating a ‘matchy-matchy’ look. A fresh take on injecting colour into your space is to use it in an ombre effect. This means for example selecting a navy-blue rug, paired with a powder blue buffet unit and an array of cushions in a variety of blue tones. The key to nailing this look is to keep the remaining items in the space neutral and allowing your varying shades of colour to do all the talking. Â

Trend 4: 3D & Textural Artworks
Another trend I have seen recently from suppliers and artists here in Brisbane, but was highlighted at the Décor and Design show is 3D and textural artworks. Art is often a focal point of a room and instead of opting for bright, bold colours, we are seeing wow factor be created through sculptural designs and 3D movement. Check out artist such as Adele Naidoo for some breathtaking sculptural artworks or if you’re wanting a more budget friendly option Koala Living have some great textural pieces.

Trend 5: Carved Timber Detailing
Throughout the 2020’s we are seeing design lean a lot more into textural details as we move away from the sleek, minimal designs seen in the 2000’s and 2010’s. Carved timber detailing is being seen throughout furniture from all of the main suppliers I deal with and I’m loving this style! Carved detailing can come in the form of turned legs on a table or the front edge of a buffet unit adding subtle interest to a furniture piece in an intriguing way. This is a great way to add personality to a room without going overboard. To keep this trend feeling fresh and modern I suggest pairing your carved furniture pieces with clean lines and soft shapes for a contrasting, yet balanced look.
