How To Get Your Home Organised For The Festive Season
The silly season is fast approaching and now is the perfect time to get our homes in order! Christmas time brings with it so many amazing activities and fun-filled traditions, often involving the home. We have family visit that we haven’t seen in months, throw parties for our friends and add much more décor to our homes than is usually on display. There are a few things you can do to prepare for the festive season that will make everything run smoothly. Here are our top 5 tips for getting your home organised for the festive season!
Strategically Set Up Your Tree
How frustrating is it when you go to take down your tree in January and you can’t work out where you stored all your decorations, the tree won’t fit back in the box and you vow to not even bother putting it up next year? Okay, that may have just been my family…. When putting your tree up early December make sure you buy some storage containers that will hold all your decorations in preparation for when you put them into storage next year. Throw out the plastic packaging most decorations come in and buy yourself some cheap plastic containers that stack away easily. You can even go one step further and label each container for lights, baubles, home-made decorations, beads and ornaments you’ve found on your travels. By maintaining an order to your Christmas tree set up and take down will make it even more of a joyful experience. Now where is my Michael Bublé Christmas album, let’s get this tree up!!
Plan Christmas Lunch In Early December
No matter how extravagant or laid back your Christmas lunch may be, it is essential to be organised early. Set aside a night in early December to write out a list of food you will be requiring on this special day. You can then write yourself a shopping list and ask your guests to bring a couple of dishes too! Once you have organised one of the most important aspects of Christmas, the food, it is time to look through your cupboards and ensure you have enough plates and dishes for the big day. If you want to make a big effort this Christmas, you could even pop to your local Kmart or Target and pick up a new matching set of dinner plates. They are so cheap at the moment and have an array of different themes to match your décor. My favourite is this gold rimmed serving plate from Target!
Tackle Cleaning, One Task At A Time
Start by writing a list of every cleaning task you need to complete before your Christmas event. Whether that be a Christmas party or Christmas day itself. Once you have your list together you can tackle each item gradually day by day, that way it doesn’t feel too overwhelming. You could even stick it to your fridge and cross off each task as you complete it for extra satisfaction! We don’t often have a lot of spare time during December, so by tackling small tasks in the evening or before you head to work for the day, cleaning doesn’t feel as daunting. By the time Christmas rolls around you will have a sparkling home and can relax and enjoy the special day.
Stock Your Fridge And Pantry
Let’s be honest, one of the greatest things about Christmas is all the delicious food and drink we consume over the festive period! A simple trick is to buy extra food in early December you can use as gifts for when the unexpected guest pops by. A box of chocolates, a bottle of champagne and some beautifully packaged Christmas biscuits make perfect small gifts. If you have leftovers, you can always share them with your family on Christmas day! Having your fridge stocked with cheese, crackers and dips is always great at this time of year too. Pick up a few on your weekly shopping trip so you don’t have to run out late Friday night when you remember you have guests dropping by on the weekend. Don’t forget to keep fresh fruit and vegetables on hand to make sure you stay healthy during the silly season and don’t have to work harder on your New Year’s Resolutions in January!
Embrace All The Festive Scents
One of my favourite things about this time of year is the candles! Now is the time to start filling your home with the scent of gingerbread, pine trees, marshmallows and a crackling fire. Although we may not have a white Christmas here in Australia, we can definitely make our homes smell like one! When we lived in New York City we had a beautiful, real Christmas Tree that stood at a magnificent 6-foot in our tiny, little apartment! The scent that enveloped you every time you opened the door was something I will never forget. I honestly think that the smell of a real Christmas tree would have to be my favourite smell in the world! And while I can’t get a real Christmas tree in the 35-degree Brisbane heat, I can buy a candle that will ALMOST do the trick!
The best tip we can give for preparing your home for Christmas is to fill it with laughter, joy and love! Try to relax and be thankful for everything that you have this Christmas as December is a time to reflect on the year that has past and look forward to new beginnings.
