5 Things you can do today to improve your lifestyle

There are so many small improvements we can make to our day-to-day life that can have a big impact on our mental and physical health. I have been incorporating the below tips into my routine the past year and am loving the results! From planning and organising to cleaning and reading, I have collated my favourite lifestyle improvements of the moment. I would love to make this a regular series on the blog, so if you like today’s post be sure to let me know on Instagram! Now, let’s jump into the ‘5 Things to do today to improve your lifestyle’.

1. Listen to Podcasts

Podcasts are such a great tool for entertainment, inspiration and learning. There are endless topics to listen to from health to design to murder mysteries. I find that they are a great way to passively learn as you can be driving, cooking or exercising whilst listening to a podcast. I love listening to life inspiration and entrepreneurship podcasts such as ‘Your Creative Start’ and ‘The Skinny Confidential’. While my favourite home design podcast would have to be the classic ‘Young House Love has a podcast’. I’d love to hear your suggestions too, so DM on Instagram to share the podcast love!

2. Plan your week at the beginning of every week

Dedicating 30minutes or less every Sunday or Monday to planning out your week will make a huge difference to your daily lifestyle. I love to use a traditional weekly planner from Kikki-K, but there are plenty of online tools such as Google Calendar and Outlook if you are more tech savvy. Firstly, I write down any events, dinners and appointments I have locked in and then plot out my spare time and work commitments. If you have been following me for a while you will know I am a HUGE fan of a to-do list. I find that writing down little to-do lists for the week helps me stay on track and reach any small or large goals I set. Documenting and planning out your week saves you time in the long run, as everything is in one dedicated place.

3. Eliminate distractions at every meal

This is something new I have been testing out recently during mealtime – eliminating distractions. This means purely just sitting, eating and enjoying your food. Not only does this allow your mind to wander, daydream and have a break, but it also allows you to eat slower, taste every mouthful and notice how the food is making you feel. The past few years I have found myself either holding my phone and scrolling through Instagram while eating breakfast and lunch or staring at the TV while consuming my dinner. It’s amazing the difference eliminating distractions has on mental clarity and your ability to appreciate the food in front of you. I highly suggest going ‘tech free’ with every meal you eat this week. I can almost guarantee you will be continuing this habit into the future!

4. Give your home a quick 5-minute tidy before leaving every morning

Coming home to a tidy house is one of life’s small luxuries. There is nothing better than walking in your front door and not seeing a pile of dishes or clothes to be cleaned. Just a quick whiz around your home before you leave for work in the morning will make such a difference to your state of mind at the end of the day. Start by putting away everything you’ve used to make your breakfast, making the bed and straightening up your living and dining room. It doesn’t have to be a full organisation and cleaning session, just a simple tidy up to make your ‘future-self’ feel better at the end of a busy work day.

5. Read a book before you go to bed

This is one of my absolute favourite things to do and I believe it makes such a difference! At the beginning of 2018 I set a goal to read every night before bed and I have religiously stuck to it (excluding a few late nights and lazy weekends). We have so much stimuli in our daily life from phones to laptops to YouTube videos to TV that our brains need a rest before even thinking about falling asleep. There is so much evidence to show that avoiding technology before bedtime results in numerous health benefits and a much better night’s sleep. I aim for 30 minutes each night before falling asleep, although sometimes I can only manage 5 before my eyes feel dreary. The last thing you want to be doing before bed is stare at Instagram or your emails. If you aren’t a reader, it’s about time you became one!
