Often we don’t have the budget to do a full renovation or even buy new accessories to brighten up our space. But there are a number of things you can do to elevate and refresh a room and it can only take an afternoon! By simply changing a few things around, sorting or adding something different, we can create a whole new look! Read on to find out my top tips for refreshing a room in an afternoon!
1. Hang all those pictures you've been meaning to:
I bet we all have some prints that need framing or artwork sitting in storage. Have a look at what art pieces and prints you have and hang them in rooms that are lacking some vibrancy! You can also create your own art by simply buying a few affordable frames from your local K-mart or $2 store and tearing out beautiful pages in magazines, calendars, fabric swatches or anything else you can think of! Be creative with this one and you could even try making your own painted art piece!
2. Redecorate with your own items:
One of my favourite things to do is ‘shop my own home’. Take away all your accessories, decorative items and soft furnishings. Then, redecorate with the same items but using them in different vignettes and in new spaces or rooms. By simply moving a few home décor pieces around, you can create an entirely new look and feel!
3. Cosy it up!
A great way to refresh and restyle a room is by adding throws, cushions and blankets. Layer up your bed, accent chairs and sofas with an assortment of cushions and throw blankets. Not only does this create a more interesting and layered effect but also evokes a cosy vibe and instantly makes you want to snuggle on the couch.
4. Rearrange the floor plan:
Most furniture items in a room can be shuffled around and rearranged. Even think about smaller spaces where you can switch an item from one corner to another. By shuffling furniture around in spaces we instantly create a whole new look. A room can feel like an entirely new area simply by shifting a few pieces of furniture around!
5. Add some greenery:
Head outside and pick some foliage from the neighbourhood then pop them in a vase or glass jar – instant refresh! If you are after something a bit longer lasting then head to your local nursery and grab a few plants, then spend the afternoon potting and decorating the room with some greenery.
6. Add a scent:
Scent is one of the most powerful senses and I believe it can truly make a difference to the way you feel. Switch up the different scents you use in your spaces to evoke an array of emotions. Try adding lavender and citrus to the bedroom to create a calm atmosphere or a warm woody scent to the living areas for a comfortable relaxed vibe.
7. Paint Something!
Get your DIY on and paint some old furniture that is looking a bit worse for wear! Or check out your local second hand store or Gumtree to find a one-off furniture piece you can paint and update to make your own. You can also try painting a few smaller items like vases, trays etc to add a personal touch to your space without breaking the bank.
